Buffalo Pretzels


I've been wanting to make flavored pretzels for a while.  I snack on pretzels all the time--more than potato chips and I grew up in a serious potato chip house.  So I finally got around to trying these buffalo flavored pretzels for a recent party.  They are delicious.  A little spicy with a kick of heat at the end, these pretzels are great for snacking with a beer during the game, any game.  Or just while watching TV.

The realization that I could take ordinary pretzels and turn them into the flavored kind that usually cost a few bucks extra came from Pinterest (are you surprised?).  This recipe from Sarah at The Pajama Chef was exactly the simple kind of recipe I needed to convince me.  My version uses about 2/3 of the amount of pretzels and half the butter.  The amount of hot sauce remained the same because I really wanted the kick of flavor, but I added in some Worcestershire sauce, as I usually do when I make wings or other Buffalo flavored goodies.  There was a nice amount of heat, but I might bump it up with an extra Tablespoon of hot sauce to really make the flavor shine, or add in a bit of cayenne.  Since I'll be making these again soon (hello, tailgate food), I'll have to try out those alterations and see what happens.

Buffalo Pretzels


Ingredients

8 cups pretzels
5 Tablespoons butter
2 Tablespoons hot sauce
1 Tablespoon ranch mix
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon celery salt

Measure pretzels into a large bowl and set aside.


In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt butter then stir in hot sauce, ranch mix, Worcestershire sauce and celery salt.


Pour butter mixture over pretzels and stir to coat evenly.


Spread out coated pretzels on a parchment or Silpat lined baking sheet or roasting pan.  Alternatively, you can use a stoneware sheet pan.


Bake at 250 degrees F for 30-45 minutes, stirring every 10-15 minutes, until sauce is absorbed and pretzels are dry and crisp.


Cool completely on baking sheet, then transfer to an airtight container.

Makes 8 cups.
